I picked up this book right when it came out, and have primarily used it as (as noted elsewhere) a companion book to others put out by Jeff Jewitt and Bob Flexner. This particular edition was an update to include some information on new types of finishing and refinishing techniques and products. Of the references I have, it probably is the most heavily slanted towards modern finishes and spray gun methods, but it does provide useful information on hand applied finish methods suitable for a smaller workshop. Dresdner is a fairly regular contributor to Fine Woodworking and several other woodworking magazines and forums, but has not been much involved with the OldTools Porch to my knowledge.
